Carving for Beginners - The Spoon

Join Matthew, a life long carver and whittler, as he shares his talents with those interested in learning how to carve correctly with quality tools.  Start with a basswood blank, and leave with a perfectly usable 6" spoon with your own personalized handle.  Matthew, owner of his own architectural carving business in Stowe, brings a wealth of knowledge to this introductory carving course.   The key to easy carving is a good tool.  We will have high quality carving knives and chisels available to use, with an option to purchase them at our cost.     Instructor: Matthew Strong   Fee: $30    Optional purchase of knife and chisel, add $30. Carving in Wood - Animal Figurines

Free Form Whittling for Beginners

Join Matt for this new spring offering where everyone will go into the CVU woods to harvest sticks to whittle with a jackknife.  Learn the basics of handling a knife safely, reading the grain of a stick, selecting a decent piece to whittle, adding your own creativity to the selection, and knife-working techniques.  Participants will complete one or more of the following: a small kayak, letter opener, canoe, a rhythm stick or free-form design finished piece.  Participants will need a locking jack knife in order to participate.  If  you do not have access to one, let us know before the class date to make sure we have one for you to borrow.

Flower Arranging - The Fresh Spring Vase

Watercolor for Beginners

Watercolor Flowers - Refining Your Skills

Painting with Water Soluble Oils

All experience levels welcome! Join Bob, a local art educator, to explore oil painting without the fuss and bother of turpentine, oily rags, etc. Beginners or more advanced painters will receive individual guidance in simple and effective approaches to still life, portrait, and landscape. Learn traditional oil painting techniques and essential elements of color theory while discovering the potential of this medium to realize luminescence and depth in a variety of subjects. Knitting for Beginners

Sewing Workshop - Evening

Learn to make a garment, or alter a hand-me-down or resale shop purchase as you learn to sew.  Use our machines or bring your own.  If you bring your own machine that you do not know how to use, plan to come 30 minutes early for the first 2 classes for tutoring (add $10 to fee).  Shop for material after the first class.  Louella brings years of home economics teaching experience with her to ensure a great class.  Instructor: Louella Strobridge  Fee: $90   Limit: 8

Sewing Workshop - Tuesday Afternoon

Woodworking - You Build It!!

This class is designed for beginners and those woodworkers with a specific project they would like to work on in the shop.  Participants will learn the basics of woodworking through the construction of a small project of their choosing such as an end table, shelf, or gun rack.  Brett, a certified design and technology educator, will lead everyone through design, tool use and then construction.   Former Access wood class participants bringing in their own project should start on April 6 (and pay $145) unless interested in a review of shop equipment.  All others begin March 30.  Over the 24 hours of shop time, everyone will utilize many of the hand and power tools in the CVU shop as well as receive expert advice.  Newcomers will shop for materials after the first week.   Instructor: Brett Walker Fee: $165 (returning participants start April 6; cost is $145)  Limit: 12

Drawing for Beginners

Drawing is all about seeing. This offering for adults is designed for those interested in beginning drawing techniques.  Using graphite, everyone will explore the fundamentals of drawing. Drawing - The Next Steps

Rug Hooking II - New Project

Presented by popular demand, participants will continue rug hooking with a new and more advanced project with Diane's expert help. If you have taken Diane's beginner course or have some rug hooking experience, this class is for you. Participants will need to bring their frame, hook and a pattern or design in mind. Rug Hooking for Beginners

Calligraphy for Beginners and Novices

This class is designed for beginners and those with introductory experience.  This is a  nuts-and-bolts intro to beautiful handwriting! This 12 hours of studio work will begin with examination of letter shapes and proportions using pencils and markers, then proceed to the exploration of letterforms for the Italic style of writing (both lower and upper cases) using the broad edge nib and ink. Join Lydia, a CVU educator, in learning about layout, use of color, and paper choices, as everyone will complete basic lettering projects.  Once you gain the power of the pen, you can use this skill for a lifetime.  More styles will be covered if time allows.  Quality pens and all materials and handouts are included in the fee.

Darkroom Open Lab for Black and White Photography

For those film photographers already familiar with developing and printing, use the CVU darkroom at your own pace. Bring developed film & your own paper and work on one of our 7 enlargers.  Price includes use of chemicals and equipment. Staff person may be available to help, but there will be no formal instruction.  A great opportunity for anyone with printing knowledge, but no equipment.  24+ hours of darkroom use.

From Tree to Table:  Wooden Bowl Turning for Beginners

Rustic Furniture - Adult Chair

Join Michael, a local artisan, in creating your own heirloom after 2 weeks of work.  Build your own full-size rustic adult chair made of birch and alder.  Michael goes out in the woods to gather all the materials.  All materials including hardware part of fee.  Participants should bring a reliable drill and several drill bits, hammer and measuring tape. Rustic Furniture - Adult Bench/Love Seat

Portuguese Comfort Food

Risotto Demystified

Barbeque Action!  A Feast to Go!

Come join Adele for this class to make your own tomato-based barbeque sauce, perfect for chicken, pork, beef or fish.  Learn to make a terrific peanut sauce which goes great with chicken.  Everyone will sample Adele's peanut chicken and will take home enough sauce to do your own. Great Baking: Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies

Have you put cut-out cookies into the oven looking great, only to see them come out flat?  Come spend an afternoon with Carol to learn the simple basics of making great sugar cookie cut-outs.  Everyone will make the dough, roll it, and cut out the shapes of your choice.  You will be able to add a few sugar sprinkles or a light glaze to your cookies too.  Bring an apron or use one of ours.    Everyone will leave with about 2 dozen delicious cookies.  All supplies included in fee.  Instructor: Carol Fox    Fee:  $20     Limit: 16

Italian Easter Desserts

Born from a tradition of visiting neighbors and sharing food, this holiday dessert recipe has been in Adele's family for generations.  Everyone in Italy makes ricotta cheese cake their own way, depending on the region of the country they are from, and here is a chance to enjoy one delicious variation on a theme. Everyone will go home with an 8" round cake to share.  Additionally, you will make a traditional citrus flavored cookie with a sugar glaze and decorated with sprinkles. If you can resist eating these before the weekend, you will have cake to share when visitors come by on Easter morning.  Of course, people of all backgrounds are welcome and surely will appreciate these terrific desserts. Pennywhistle for Beginners

Learn the simple, yet expressive ancient musical instrument of Ireland, sometimes known as the tin whistle, feadóg, or Irish whistle. DJ Techniques (ages 10 & up open to parents)

Students will learn DJ turntable music mixing techniques, beat matching, and scratching on real vinyl and digital Serato Scratchlive. Sessions also include a lyric writing workshop and criticism as well as rap battling techniques and stage presence. Summer Rock 'n Roll Camp

This is a unique opportunity for advanced-beginner, intermediate or advance musicians, to experience playing music in a band setting. The requirements are to have some experience playing an instrument, preferably an instrument that is suited for a band, i.e., guitar, bass, keyboard or percussion. Vocalists are also welcome. If you are an advanced player and can improvise, any instrument is welcome. If you already play guitar and want to learn bass, or or percussion, there will be that opportunity. (Guitar and keyboards are more difficult to pick up quickly.) Students will learn the processes of playing as a band, song writing and performance. By consensus, we will choose songs to perform, learn how to set up and use a sound system, create a band name and logo with promotional posters. Stroller Strides

Stroller Strides is a total body fitness program for moms to exercise with their babies (3 - 24 months). West African Dance

Core Strength Training - Mat Style -

Aromatherapy 101:  Essential Oils for Health & Beauty

Stroller Strides

Music Games for Kids (ages 4-8) and Parents

Kids and parents will have a rocking blast while singing dozens of traditional songs and learning original songs and games that encourage participation and dancing.  Everyone gets to help create new original songs and new versions of familiar ones. DJ Techniques (ages 10 and up open to parents)

Students will learn DJ turntable music mixing techniques, beat matching, and scratching on real vinyl and digital Serato Scratchlive. Sessions also include a lyric writing workshop and criticism as well as rap battling techniques and stage presence. Cooking Together: 3rd-5th Graders with Adult

Growing up, Adele's extended Italian family always cooked and ate together.  Last year's participants loved this class! Slow down with Adele and enjoy the pleasures of cooking and eating with a youngster.  Beginning with a vegetable base (soffritto), create a number of different dishes that are sure to be crowd pleasers at any meal.  Recipes and activities for this class will give everyone options to build a meal to satisfy one's own tastes.  Chicken, beef, beans, and rice will be used to prepare a delicious homemade meal.  For dessert, you will prepare a crispy, "better for you" Chocolate Chip Cookie served hot out of the oven —a number one crowd pleaser. Incredible Decorated Easter Cookies - All Ages Welcome

Learn the art of decorating great sugar cookies that will dazzle those lucky enough to receive one.  Join Carol for this hands-on afternoon as everyone uses decorating tools, learns to make the sweet decorating glaze, and comes away with presents for those they care about.  It is always a special time when Carol bakes with loved ones and neighbors.  Your Easter cookies will look and taste great, and you can use them for place settings at your holiday table!  Eleven year olds through adult aged learners invited to participate on their own; 5-10 year olds need to participate with an older sibling or adult to help.  All will leave the class with a dozen cookies along with the basic tools needed to decorate for a lifetime.  Bring your own apron or use one of ours.  This is messy fun!  Please advise us of any nut allergies at the time of registration.

Horsemanship for Adults

Most of us were taught to ride without understanding the perspective of the horse. This class offers you an opportunity to fill in that gap in understanding. You will learn how a horses sense, move, and feel and how they interact with each other and other animals— including humans.  New riders, new horse owners, or experienced riders will gain a wealth of fascinating information that will promote a respectful relationship with a horse.    Topics include prehistoric development, anatomy/physiology, herd behavior, training techniques, gaits/movements, and communication development. Bridge for Beginners

These lessons feature a 'hands on' teaching approach with students learning the game by doing exercises with actual cards at the table. No knowledge of bridge is required. If you always wanted to learn, this is a great opportunity in what has become a regular Access offering.  A lifetime of fun follows as people everywhere are playing bridge.  The 8-week course will give participants basic bidding system and card playing skills to build on with continued practice.
