Pottery - 3 Great Times for 9 Weeks

Small Classes • Extra Studio Time!
Designed for learners of all skill levels, work on the wheel and/or learn to hand-build beautiful finished ceramic pieces of your own design.  This is a great way to try pottery or continue to improve your budding skills. There will be open studio time from 3:30 to 8 p.m. on Monday evenings.  18 hours with instructor, 40 hours of extra studio time available.    Jen Labie brings years of pottery teaching experience to Access students.  Clay and materials included.

Handbuilt Tiles - all levels

Thursday   5:30-7:30 p.m.   9 weeks  Starts April 3 
Join Jen is this new Access offering. Create beautiful tiles from our clay or pre-fired smooth tiles.  Students will experiment with surface design using textures, carving and underglazes. Produce finished functional tiles to be used in the bath, kitchen or as wall decorations.  Use your imagination as to how best to display or use your creations.  Open studio time from 3:30 to 8 p.m. on Monday evenings.  As usual, all materials included in fee for this class.

Knit Awesome Socks
Thursday  7-8:30 p.m     9 weeks  Starts April 3
Time to take your knitting skills in another direction -- towards the feet.  Learn to make a colorful and comfortable pair of socks.  Once you can do this, you can make socks year round for family and friends.  Relaxing, rewarding and fun; creating variations will be possible.  Pattern provided.   Nothing needed but enthusiasm for the first class.  Shop for yarn after week one.

Watercolor for Beginners - Afternoon

Learn the foundation of this versatile and exciting medium, integrating design, color, composition and light.  Ginny, a professional illustrator, will lead participants through exercises designed to explore the many techniques associated with watercolor and foster the skills needed to enjoy painting for years to come.  Quality materials are important in watercolor so we supply you with brushes to keep and a reasonable amount of paint and paper to use in class and at home.  Materials cost approximately $20.

Painting with Water Soluble Oils
Monday     5:30-7:30 p.m.  9 weeks  Starts March 31
Brighten up your Spring with this new Access offering! Join Bob, a local art educator, to explore oil painting without the fuss and bother of turpentine, oily rags, etc. These more eco-friendly materials yield wonderful still life, landscape, and portrait paintings, and clean up with soap and water.  Traditional painting techniques will be covered as well as the basic components of color and composition. Beginners and more experienced painters welcome.  Each student will receive $30 + worth of quality supplies included in the fee.  Just bring your enthusiasm to the first class.

Drawing for Beginners

Drawing is all about seeing. This offering for adults is designed for those interested in beginning drawing techniques.  Using graphite, everyone will explore the fundamentals of drawing. Class covers perspective, contour, shading and composition. Just bring your enthusiasm, as all paper and implements are included.

Drawing - The Next Steps

Continue improving your drawing skills or pick up where you left off, all with expert guidance from Christine.   Students will build upon the fundamentals of line, shadow, perspective and composition using graphite and other materials to explore portraiture and more complex compositions.  Prerequisite: a drawing class sometime in your life.

Rug Hooking for Beginners

Learn the basics of rug hooking while creating a small project. Diane always has a great group of students. Topics covered include: tools, materials, design, wool quantity, color planning, basic dyeing techniques, and finishing your project. No supplies needed for first class.  Hook and fabric kit included.  Students will need to purchase wool and a hoop or frame after first class.  Designed for high school and older.

Rug Hooking II -New Project

Photography Skills - B&W Film

Designed for beginners and skilled amateurs, Sarah can help you learn quickly.  For beginners, this will be an introduction to B & W film developing and printing.  For the more advanced student, Sarah, an Alfred University graduate in photography, shares her expertise about composition, lighting, and darkroom techniques, taking you further into your art.  There is plenty of time to discuss individual challenges and receive over the shoulder advice for everyone.  This is a hands-on, small lab learning experience.  Bring your own film camera to learn how to use it most effectively.  Darkroom lab time from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday evenings included.

Darkroom Open Lab for Black and White Photography

For those film photographers already familiar with developing and printing, use the CVU darkroom at your own pace. Bring developed film & your own paper and work on one of our 7 enlargers.  Price includes use of chemicals and equipment. Staff person available to help, but there will be no formal instruction.  A great opportunity for anyone with printing knowledge, but no equipment.  27+ hours of darkroom use. Fee: $75  Limit: 7

Sewing for Beginners - Evening

Learn to make a garment, or alter a hand-me-down or resale shop purchase as you learn to sew.  Use our machines or bring your own.  If you bring your own machine that you do not know how to use, plan to come 30 minutes early for the first 2 classes for tutoring (add $10 to fee).  Shop for material after the first class.  Louella brings years of home economics teaching experience with her to ensure a great class.

Sewing for Six Weeks in the Afternoon

Rustic Furniture - Adult Chair    2 Choices!!
Join Michael, a local artisan, and create your own heirloom.  Build a full-size rustic adult chair made of birch and alder.  Michael gathers all the materials in the woods.  Hardware included for assembling a chair to take home at the end of this 2-week course. Participants should bring a reliable drill and several drill bits, hammer and measuring tape. Some tools will be available for loan. Dozens of first-time builders have made these sturdy, unique chairs in previous courses here at CVU.

Home Repair Done Right
Monday   5:30-8:30 p.m.     9 weeks      Starts March 31
Always wanted to fix a leaky faucet, clean out a trap, repair a hole in the sheet rock, hang pictures with mollies, wire a lamp, change a fixture, set tile, and more, all without using duct tape? Brett, a certified design and technology educator, will introduce people to the tools needed, and demonstrate the best approach to doing simple repairs. Then participants will practice the skills hands-on in class before taking on the home repair.  Power drill, circular saw, jig saw, mitre saw and palm sander use and essential hand tools for all households will be covered, as well as a discussion of which jobs to take on first.  Bring your specific questions, even digital photos of those small jobs you want to tackle yourself.   All materials included.

Woodworking for Beginners-You Build It!!   
Tuesday    5:30-8:30 p.m.   9 weeks      Starts April 1
Students will learn the basics of woodworking through the construction of a small project. Brett, a certified design and technology educator, will lead participants through design, tool use and then the construction of  a small multi-use shelf unit, bird feeder, or similar type project.  Over the 27 hours of shop time, everyone will utilize many of the hand and power tools in the CVU shop. This class is designed for total beginners as well as those that would like to learn how to do it right.  Shop for your materials after the first week.

Woodworking Workshop

Designed as an open lab, participants need to bring in a project they want to work on. Brett, a certified design and technology educator, will be your advisor as you work on starting or completing a project.  Students should have a basic familiarity with a table saw, planer and joiner and/or lathe. Review of specifics of CVU tools will be presented. Expert advice will be available in order for you to accomplish your goals. Take advantage of 27 hours of shop time with well oiled and sharp machines.  Designed for novice through advanced woodworkers.   Students are responsible for bringing in their own materials over the duration of the course.

Flower Arranging - The Spring Wreath

Dumpling Dim Sum 101

Take a walk down the ancient path of the silk road, where the weary traveler takes a break at the local tea house, sips on green tea and nibbles on little morsels that warm the belly.  Explore the traditional technique in preparing three courses that will indulge both your palette and your sense of adventure.  It is easier than you think in this continuously popular class!  The evening workshop focuses on authentic ingredients available in Vermont, gives some simple techniques to make food look like art, and guides in the preparation and eating (of course) of three dim sum courses:  Shrimp Sui Mai, Three Mushroom Dumpling, and Wonton Soup.

Cake Decorating I

Designed for beginners, learn to decorate cakes using professional techniques.  This course is the first in a series of Wilton designed courses.  Fee covers Wilton decorating kit and book for beginners that are yours to keep.  People will even learn to make the rose.  Sally has vast experience teaching these courses, and many of her students have gone on to take all 3 courses.  Take Course II following this one; Course III will be offered in the fall.

Cake Decorating II

Aunt Jane's Matzo Ball Soup

Learn to make a great chicken soup as Jane shares her method to create her terrific matzo balls. Jane has added to the flavor of this recipe passed down by Grandma Mary by using Vermont raised chickens.  Everyone will eat  well in class and take home a quart of matzo ball soup.  You’ll leave with the knowledge and experience to prepare this ancient meal for your family.

Homemade Gefilte Fish

Join Connie and Eddie to learn how to make gefilte fish for Passover without opening a jar.  Two methods of preparation, one from fresh fish fillets, and another from raw pre-ground fish, will allow you to return to your own kitchen and make the best gefilte fish you have ever served.  Seasoned to your own personal taste, each participant will have enough to eat and have some to take home to family.  This is your opportunity to prepare from scratch, and enjoy a light fresh-tasting traditional delicacy.  This will be an evening of eating, stories, and fun.   All ingredients included.

More than rice, Italian risotto is a creamy delight (without cream) which can be made a hundred different ways, yet the basics are simple and easy to learn. Italian Easter Desserts

Born from a tradition of visiting neighbors and sharing food, this holiday dessert recipe has been in Adele's family for generations.  Everyone in Italy makes ricotta cheese cake their own way, depending on the region of the country they are from, and here is a chance to enjoy one delicious variation on a theme. Everyone will go home with an 8" round cake to share.  Additionally, you will make a  traditional citrus flavored cookie with a sugar glaze and decorated with sprinkles. If you can resist eating these before the weekend, you will have cake to share when visitors come by on Easter morning.  Of course, all people of all backgrounds are welcome and surely will appreciate these terrific desserts.

Incredible Decorated Easter Cookies - All Ages Welcome

Learn the art of decorating great sugar cookies that will dazzle those lucky enough to receive one.  Join Carol for this hands-on afternoon as everyone uses decorating tools, learns to make the sweet decorating glaze, and comes away with presents for those they care about.  It is always a special time when Carol bakes with loved ones and neighbors.  Your Easter cookies will look and taste great, and you can use them for place settings at your holiday table!  Eleven year olds through adult aged leaners invited to participate on their own; 5-10 year olds need to participate with an older sibling or adult to help.  All will leave the class with a dozen cookies along with the basic decorating kit needed to decorate for a lifetime.  Bring your own apron or use one of ours.  This is messy fun!  Please advise us of any nut allergies at the time of registration.  Sign up right away as this class begins soon.

Pennywhistle for Beginners
Wednesday     5:30-6:30 p.m.     6 weeks   Starts April 8
Learn the simple, yet expressive ancient musical instrument of Ireland, sometimes known as the tin whistle, feadóg, or Irish whistle. We will learn traditional melodies and dance tunes; airs, jigs, slipjigs, hornpipes and perhaps a mazurka and a polka thrown in for fun. Great for beginners - we will progress from learning unadorned melodies and work our way up to some simple, yet impressive ornamentations. Tuition includes an instrument of your very own for a lifetime of musical enjoyment.

Guitar for Beginners

This class is designed for those of all ages with little or no experience, 11 to 111 years old.  Join Sallie, an enthusiastic educator with years of teaching experience, to learn basic acoustic guitar skills and work on learning a few chords and songs.  Everyone will be playing music before long in this full 9-week class.  Bring your own guitar.  An electronic tuner is strongly recommended but not a pre-requisite.

This class is designed for those students that have taken Beginning Spanish here or sometime in their lifetime.  The class is taught in English and Spanish. Our goal is to have everyone placed in the right class in order to learn. French I The Beginnings -Continued

Conversational French Immersion

Italian for Travelers - Afternoon Class

Learn the beginnings of conversational Italian the way Italians sound. Practice the language in situations you will encounter on a trip to Italy.  Join native speaker Francesca as she shares her love of Italy and this beautiful language. How to  Make it in Voice-Overs
Monday  7-9 p.m. 1 night March 24
Join Dan Levine, Tony Award nominee, musical composer, and producer of commercials, for this 2 hour adventure into the world of Voice-Overs.  Focused on how to break into the business of hearing your voice on commercials, films, and videos, Dan will give participants an overview of the industry, income potential, industry opportunities, and practical steps to take in order to break into voice-over work, and encourage everyone to step up to the mic and do some practice recordings by the end of the evening.  This is an exciting new Access class from one of our local experts.

Beginner Mandarin Chinese
Tuesday   4:10-5:30 p.m.     9 weeks   Starts April 1
Learn one of the oldest languages in the world with a continuous history of at least 3,000 years. This class is for students with no knowledge of the Chinese language or with a very limited Mandarin background.  If you want to seriously begin to learn Chinese, join Xue to develop abilities in listening, speaking, and reading and move towards some simple writing of Chinese.  Begin to communicate accurately and appropriately in simple Chinese for everyday purposes such as greetings, introducing friends and relatives, expressing gratitude for someone, shopping, and numbers, etc.  Additionally, Chinese culture and place info will enhance your learning.   Materials cost of $20 included.

Swing Dance: Big Band Bash Meets Rock 'n Roll

This class is designed for beginners and near beginners interested in learning Swing.  Join Terry for this really fun and productive dance session and with practice during the week, you will be ready to hit the dance floor at any occasion.  Kick up your heels to the swinging sounds

Ballroom Bootcamp - The Basics

Level 1 Tap to Contemporary Hits (ages 12-adult)
Monday     6-7 p.m.         8 weeks           Starts April 7
Beginner and intermediate tappers will enjoy this class that begins with a jazz warm-up to stretch the major muscle groups.  Next, you'll begin learning the basic foot rhythms and steps of classic tap dance.  Finish by putting all of your new moves into a group combination, all to contemporary music!  Tap shoes are required.

West African Dance

Keep in shape this spring with African dance done to live drumming!  Join Dayna Scott of Jeh Kulu Dance and Drum Theater, Ashley Bessette, and Hassimou Chimie Bangoura, a master drummer from Guinea, West Africa, for this fun and upbeat class.  New students and those with experience are encouraged to participate.   This is a popular new Access offering, so sign up early.  Classes include a warm up and progressive instruction to rhythms from Guinea, Senegal and Mali.  All instructor stipends will be donated to families in Guinea. West African Drum Class for Beginners

Join Chimie Bangoura of Guinea, West Africa in this new Access offering.  Designed for beginners, participants will learn the traditional rhythms and techniques of West African hand drumming (djembe).  Bring your own djembe or rent one of ours during class time for a modest fee of $25.  It won't be long before everyone will be able to set the rhythm to dance a lifetime.   All instructor stipends are being donated to families in Guinea.  Donations over and above fee will further support
these families.

Core Strength Training
Tuesday    5:30-6:30 p.m.   9 weeks   Starts April 1
Work on your core strength to help sculpt your body over the year.  This course uses Pilates style mat exercises in combination with other exercises to develop core strength and control, particularly in the abdominals and back.  The workout helps everyone combine breath control with your activity to promote improved concentration, better posture, a flatter stomach and lean, sculpted muscles. Suitable for all fitness levels.  Use one of our mats, or bring your own.  Participants will leave each class knowing they have exercised for an hour.

Top Conditioning with Caroline

Join Caroline in this new dynamic class focused on muscle and aerobic conditioning for participants at all levels.  A great workout, Caroline will show you how you stay in condition all year long without a lot of machines or gadgets.  Be prepared to sweat, increase your heart rate, and have fun while doing it.  Caroline, a certified fitness trainer, has trained St. Mike's and UVM women's athletic teams in the past.  One more good reason to join the thousands of participants here at Access.  As always, satisfaction guaranteed. Old-Fashioned Soapmaking
Thursday      6-8:30 p.m.           I night     April 17
Join herbalist and aroma therapist Alisa Andrews for an evening of old-fashioned soap making.  Using natural ingredients and essential oils, you will make a batch of beautiful, aromatic soap.  Included will be: Recipe ideas for customizing your own batches of soap with ingredients such as dried herbs, grains, goat's milk and natural colorings & scents; ideas for inexpensive and creative soap molds; recommended soap-making books and where to get supplies.  The history and basic chemistry of this fascinating process will also be discussed.  There will be plenty of time for questions, and there is hands-on opportunity each step of the process.  Each student will go home with a sample of soap, made by the group, along with a detailed instructions handout.  We will be using lye, so this class is not suitable for young children. Please bring a 1-quart, empty paperboard milk container to use as a soap mold and then take home. All materials included in fee.

Herbs for Women's Health

This class is designed for those interested in learning more about herbs commonly used to support women's health.  The class will consist of discussion, sampling of various herbs and herbal preparations, and as much hands-on learning as possible.  Preventive care, natural remedies, herb quality, harvesting, nutritional and lifestyle issues will all be topics covered as they pertain to women's health.  There may even be time to incorporate short plant identification walks in order to introduce class members to a few common wild herbs growing nearby.

Join Stuart, a certified strength and conditioning specialist, to correctly learn how to build yourself up and stay healthy with weight and resistance training.  Learn scientifically based techniques that will help you achieve fast, effective and safe results.  Each person’s individual goals, age and limitations will be addressed in class with appropriate exercises  Pre-existing injuries and limitations are taken into consideration when developing your program.  Stuart, a retired chiropractor, will focus on upper body, lower body and core strengthening and toning.  Topics covered  include proper technique, number of repetitions and sets, how much weight to lift and how often to work out.  This class is for individuals who want to increase strength, tone, kick-up weight loss, build muscle, decrease risk of osteoporosis, improve balance and coordination, improve sports-specific performance and reduce injuries.

Join David for 3 weeks of this “hot” Access offering in a specially heated room. David, a Spanish teacher at the Hinesburg Community School and Yoga instructor at Yoga Vermont, will give directions in English and Spanish.  Curious?  This 3 week session is a great way to try a new yoga approach.  Designed by David, this 90-minute vigorous workout draws from his years of Bikram, Ashtanga and Inyegar yoga practice and is guaranteed to warm everyone, provide significant therapeutic benefits and help to develop focus and awareness. Designed for all levels, focus will be on breath, posture, and the meditative effects of yoga. Remember, the room temperature will be cranked up, so expect to sweat. Meditation For Beginners

Do you often find at the end of the day that your brain seems too full? Would you like to learn how to be more centered, present and aware? Join Meg Howard in a simple practice (of Viipassana, or Insight mindful meditation) that you can then easily continue at home after only 3 weeks.  This class is ideal for those who have never meditated before or would like to try this method.  Interested in doing some reading before the class? Look for books by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Stephen Levine, Thich Nhat Hanh and Jack Kornfield. Meg Howard has been practicing and studying  meditation since 1970 and currently is an outreach counselor at CVU.

Awesome Wire and Wood Sculpture for 8 - 11 Year Olds

This 4-week offering is designed to bring the magic of turning 2D to 3D into each child's hands.  Naomi, a VT art educator, will introduce basic sculptural concepts and elements of design, including abstract and realist concepts. Altered Paper Arts  for 9-12 Year Olds

Transform paper into awesome works of useful art in this new Access offering.  Join Joy to discover that everyone can make art and have a fun time doing it. We'll create cool bookmarks, envelopes, and an altered book you can use for journaling, dreaming or recording your favorite sports statistics. Mandarin Chinese for 6-8 Year Olds

Chinese will be one of the four major world languages in the 21st Century. When possible, the best time to learn new languages is relatively early in life.  During your child's crucial "window of opportunity" (ages 1-12), language learning happens effortlessly.  Get ready to have lots of fun learning Mandarin Chinese with native Mandarin teacher Xue Li in an active and playful classroom environment. Music Seeds - Newborn through 2 Year-Olds

Incredible Decorated Easter Cookies - All Ages Welcome
Monday         4-6 p.m.       1 day        March 17
Learn the art of decorating great sugar cookies that will dazzle those lucky enough to receive one.  Join Carol for this hands-on afternoon as everyone uses decorating tools, learns to make the sweet decorating glaze, and comes away with presents for those they care about.  It is always a special time when Carol bakes with loved ones and neighbors.  Your Easter cookies will look and taste great, and you can use them for place settings at your holiday table!  Eleven year olds through adult aged leaners invited to participate on their own; 5-10 year olds need to participate with an older sibling or adult to help.  All will leave the class with a dozen cookies along with the basic decorating kit needed to decorate for a lifetime.  Bring your own apron or use one of ours.  This is messy fun!  Please advise us of any nut allergies at the time of registration.  Sign up right away as this class begins soon.

Cooking Together: 3rd-5th Graders with Adult

Growing up, Adele's extended Italian family always cooked and ate together.  Last year's participants loved this class! Slow down with Adele and enjoy the pleasures of cooking and eating with a youngster.  Beginning with a vegetable base (soffritto), create a number of different dishes that are sure to be crowd pleasers at any meal.  Recipes and activities for this class will give everyone options to build a meal to satisfy one's own tastes.  Chicken, beef, beans, and rice will be used to prepare a delicious homemade meal.  This will be  a great alternative to take-out.  For dessert, we will prepare a crispy, "better for you" Chocolate Chip Cookie--served hot out of the oven--a number one crowd pleaser. Learn to Play: Magic the Gathering - Ages 11 and older

Join Sam and Matt to learn this fun and exciting game of Magic the Gathering from two experienced players. They will begin with the basics and work toward mastery of the game and its nuances. Magic is a strategy game which combines the planning of chess with the bluffs and mystery of poker. Using Thumb/Flash Drives to Organize Files

Carry all your important files and digital pictures in your pocket with these useful procedures for backing up files on your computer using a USB Thumb- or Flash-Drive.  Everyone will follow a series of simple steps that demonstrates how to transfer files to the Thumb-Drive, make changes to the files on the Thumb-Drive using a different computer, and update the files at a home or business computer.  This is a great tool for people on the go.  Additionally, general file management techniques will be covered.  Everyone will use a CVU computer for class exercises but skills are easily transferable to other platforms, or you may use your own laptop.   Bring your own USB storage drive.

A View of Windows Vista & Office 2007

Computer Assisted Design:  KeyCreator CAD

These lessons feature a 'hands on' teaching approach with students learning the game by doing exercises with actual cards at the table. No knowledge of bridge is required. If you always wanted to learn, this is a great opportunity in what has become an Access regular offering.  A lifetime of fun follows as people everywhere are playing bridge.  The 8-week course will give participants basic bidding system and card playing skills to build on with continued practice. The instructor, Phil Sharpsteen, is an accredited ACBL teacher and the current president of the Vermont bridge unit. Beginner's Astrology

Become part of the global warming solution by learning, discussing, and sharing how to move forward while partnering with like-minded neighbors.  This "30 Day Program to Lose 5000 Pounds" is a fun, accessible, course that will show you, step-by-step, how to dramatically reduce your CO2 output in just a month's time.  Calculate your current CO2 "footprint", create plans, track progress, and connect with neighbors using the materials supplied.  This new initiative is spreading across Vermont, and will make a noticeable dent as more people participate.  Simple actions will enable you to reduce your annual household CO2 output by at least 15%.  And, for the more ambitious, discover how you can bring positive change to your workplace, local schools, and community.   Join the growing number of citizens who have decided to take global warming into their own hands.  Participants will be organized into 'neighborhood' eco-teams to support each other in the effort.

Super Bicycle Repair
Thursday     7-8:30 p.m.     5 weeks    Starts April 10
Get your hands good and greasy with this how-to workshop!  Students will be able to practice maintaining chains, brakes, pedals, shifters, and tires for optimum performance.  Brooke is a bicycle mechanic, racer, inventor, and entrepreneur; he will lead class demonstrations and provide everyone ample opportunity to work on their own or a sample bike provided by Eastern Mountain Sports.  Class will also showcase some quick fixes for common breakdowns and local resources for cool rides.  Ideal for young riders (of all ages) interested in becoming more confident road and mountain bikers!

Do you long to have your child experience the joy of reading?  Parents will meet with Michal Ricca, M.Ed., Reading Specialist for practical and easy tips to help your struggling or hard-to-motivate reader.  Every child that Mrs. Ricca has worked with has gained at least two grade levels in their reading ability, and has learned to love reading instead of asking to turn on the TV! Meet other parents and see how you can help your child at home. Horsemanship for Adults

New riders, new horse owners, or experienced riders will gain a wealth of fascinating information that will promote a respectful relationship with a horse.  Most of us were taught to ride without understanding the perspective of the horse.  You will learn how a horse senses, moves, and interacts with each other and other animals, including humans.  Topics include prehistoric development, anatomy/physiology, herd behavior, training techniques, gaits/movements, and communication development.  Experienced riders will enhance their in the saddle satisfaction.  If you've never ridden before then this is a great preparation for lessons.

Solar Energy 101

Is solar energy feasible in Vermont?  You bet it is!  Solar energy can give you power anywhere you need it - on a boat, recreational vehicle, summer cottage, on the farm, or even your home.  This class will focus on photovoltaics - the type of solar panels that make electricity when exposed to sunlight, and what they can do for you.  Learn about the potential of solar energy for our country, how solar panels and system components work, and how to design a system for your application.

Baby Sign Language Introduction

Backyard Astronomy

This is a two-week workshop designed for beginners. Participants will learn their way around the sky and be able to recognize constellations. Frank can often be found setting up his telescope in public places for others to peer into the heavens. Classes are held indoors where the skies are always perfect. Outside viewing may be possible if the skies clear.

Baby Sitting - American Red Cross - 2 days After School
Monday, April 14 and  Wednesday, April 16 3:30-6:30 p.m.
If you have already begun babysitting, are thinking about it, or have younger siblings you want to help take care of, then this is the class for you!  Young people can learn, ask questions and role play tol make them feel more comfortable around younger children.  With the information provided, young people ages 10-14 will be better prepared to care for younger children.  Throughout the two-day course, participants will learn; safety skills like how to respond in an emergency and how to provide basic first aid; how to deal with real-life babysitting situations like how to keep children safe and how to handle challenging behaviors; and basic child needs like holding, feeding and diapering children.  Parents with young children might even encourage their sitters to take this course by sharing the cost.  Babysitters who take this course are better prepared and often get more jobs than those who don't!

"Staying Connected to Your Teen"

Want some practical tips to improve your parenting skills?  CY- Connecting Youth in Chittenden South, is pleased to offer another session of our popular five-week program to help parents of teens ages 12-17.  This program helps parents develop positive family management skills and discipline practices.  It also encourages parents and teens to work together to build the skills needed for teens to make healthy choices.  If you are looking for ways to stay connected to your teen or have concerns about some of the issues they may be facing then this is the perfect course for you!  The program offers parents the opportunity to learn and share from other parents who are going through or have been through similar issues.  Dinner will be provided.  The cost is $30/per person which includes a family workbook.
