Around the World Colorful Quilt
Thursday    6-8 p.m.    7 weeks  Starts October 9
Have you always wanted to make a magnificent quilt?     Mary Anne will encourage, guide, inspire, and ensure that everyone plans, sews, and finishes an impressive quilt sure to become a family heirloom.  Very basic sewing machine experience is needed. Use your own machine or one of ours.  Participants will shop for material after the first class (Sew Many Treasures in Williston offers  discounts).  Access to sewing machine at home or use of open lab time will ensure finishing by the final class.  The good news: it's all straight sewing and arrangements to use CVU machines outside of class time can be made.   Cost of materials can range from $60-$190, depending on the size quilt (18 yards for queen size).  Open lab: 4-6 p.m. Thursdays.  Contact Mary Anne with questions at mgatos@cvuhs.org

Pottery - 4 Great Times for 9 Full Weeks --Smaller Classes Planned
Designed for learners of all skill levels, work on the wheel or learn new hand-building techniques. Create finished ceramic pieces and try pottery or continue your budding skills. Open studio time on Tuesdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. and Thursdays from 5:30-8 p.m. 18 hours with instructor, 40 hours of extra studio time available.

Holiday Gifts: Platters, Bowls and More

Create your own practical and beautiful platters and bowls for yourself or as gifts.  Made from slabs, these items will be textured with stamps handmade in class and with underglazes.  Jen has some great design ideas for everyone, and we guarantee a successful ceramics experience in this new Access offering.  All levels welcome.  For those interested, the Holiday Ornaments class follows this class in November and stamps made in this class can be used to design your ornaments.  Sign up for both and pay only $125 (save $15).

Mosaic Birdbath - Personalized

Come prepared to create your own birdbath!   Make a whimsical focal point for your garden using colorful glass tiles or ceramic pottery - it's easy and fun!  Tucked among ferns in a Fairy Garden or in a sunny mixed border, a birdbath welcomes birds during hot summer weather and adds the element of water to a design scheme.  We will supply needed materials, although bringing in a box of your own shards of Grandma's broken plates, beach stones or shells, will enhance your creation.  The material you bring in must be with you the first night, November 6.   Please dress for studio work!

Basic Drawing for Adults

Drawing is all about seeing. This offering for adults is designed for those interested in beginning drawing techniques.  Using graphite, students explore the fundamentals of drawing. Class covers perspective, contour, shading and composition. All paper and implements included.

Drawing - The Next Steps

Continue improving your drawing skills or pick up where you left off. Students will build upon the fundamentals of line, shadow, perspective and composition using graphite and other materials.  This offering is set up as a practice class where students can draw from natural still life forms and have expert guidance the whole time. Prerequisite: knowledge and understanding of basic elements of drawing.

Shaker Oval Box - Nesting Set

Join Bob as he leads everyone in this hands-on class where everyone will finish a set of 5 nesting oval shaker boxes perfect for your own home or gift for someone special.  Retail value of the handcrafted boxes is $175, so take advantage of learning to make your own.   The largest of the boxes is approximately a 5" oval, and would sit handsomely on any dresser or shelf.  To see a color photo of the boxes online, email access@cvuhs.org and we will send one to you.  Materials cost is $50 and is included in the fee.

Watercolor for Beginners

Learn the foundation of this versatile and exciting medium, integrating design, color, composition and light.  Ginny, a professional illustrator, will lead participants through exercises designed to explore the many techniques associated with watercolor and foster the skills needed to enjoy painting for years to come.  Quality materials are important in watercolor so we supply you with brushes to keep and a reasonable amount of paint and paper to use in class and at home.

Knitting for Beginners

Photography Skills - B&W Film               
Thursday   6-8 p.m.   8 weeks   Starts October 16
Designed for beginners through skilled amateurs, Sarah can help you learn quickly.  For beginners, this will be your introduction to black and white film developing and darkroom printing.  For the more advanced student, Sarah, an Alfred University graduate in the arts -photography major, will encourage you to improve your skills in composition, lighting, and darkroom techniques.  With her wealth of experience and knowledge in the field, there will be plenty of time to discuss your individual challenges as you learn.  This is a hands-on, small lab learning experience.  Develop your own film and prints.  Bring your own film camera to learn how to use it most effectively.  Extra darkroom lab time from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday evenings.

Darkroom Open Lab for Black and White Photography

For those photographers who already know the basics of developing and printing, this is your chance to use the CVU darkroom at your own pace. Bring in your developed film and work on one of our 7 enlargers.  Price includes use of all chemicals and equipment. Participants need to bring their own paper.  Staff person will be on hand to answer questions and explain the CVU setup, but there will be no formal instruction. This is a great opportunity for anyone with printing knowledge, but no equipment.  24+ hours of darkroom use for $85  Limit: 7

Painting with Water Soluble Oils

All experience levels welcome! Join Bob, a local art educator, to explore oil painting without the fuss and bother of turpentine, oily rags, etc. Beginners or more advanced painters will receive individual guidance in simple and effective approaches to still life, portrait, and landscape. Learn traditional oil painting techniques and essential elements of color theory while discovering the potential of this medium to realize luminescence and depth in a variety of subjects. Each student receives $30 + worth of quality supplies included in the fee.  Just bring your enthusiasm to the first class.

Welding for Beginners

Join CVU industrial arts instructor Dick Francis for this new Access offering.  Learn the right way to arc weld (stick), use oxy acetylene torches to braze and weld, handle Mig (wirefeed) and Tig, and even have an introduction to plasma cutting.  Plenty of time on task practicing skills is designed into this class.   Opportunity to bring in an item of your own that needs welding by the end of the session will be possible.  All materials are included in this highly technical offering.  No classes Thanksgiving week.

Rug Hooking for Beginners

Topics covered include: tools, materials, design, wool quantity, color planning, basic dyeing techniques, and finishing your project. Rustic Furniture - Adult Chair

Join Michael, a local artisan, in creating your own heirloom within 2 weeks.  Build your own full-size rustic adult chair made of birch and alder.  Michael goes out in the woods to gather all the materials and hardware included for assembling a chair to take home at the completion of this 2-week course. Participants should bring a reliable drill and several drill bits, hammer and measuring tape. Some tools will be available for loan. Dozens of first-time builders have made these sturdy, unique chairs in previous courses here at CVU.

Calligraphy for Beginners and Novices

This class is designed for beginners and those with introductory experience.  A nuts and bolts intro to beautiful handwriting! The course will begin with examination of letter shapes and proportions using pencils and markers and will proceed to the exploration of letterforms for the Italic style of writing (both lower and upper cases) using the broad edge nib and ink. Join Lydia, a CVU educator, in learning about layout, use of color, and paper choices, as everyone will complete basic lettering projects.  Once you gain the power of the pen, you can use this skill for a lifetime.  More styles will be covered if time allows.  Quality pens and all materials and handouts are included in the price.

Intro to Traditional Soap Making

Join herbalist and aromatherapist Alisa Andrews for an evening of old-fashioned soap making.  Using natural ingredients and essential oils, make a batch of beautiful, aromatic soap.  Included will be: Recipe ideas for customizing your own batches of soap with ingredients such as dried herbs, grains, and natural colorings & scents; ideas for inexpensive and creative soap molds; recommended soap-making books and where to get supplies.  The history and basic chemistry of this fascinating process will also be discussed.  Hands-on opportunity each step of the process.  Leave with a sample of soap made by the group, along with a detailed instructions handout.  We will be using lye, a caustic ingredient.  Appropriate for ages 15 - 115 years old.  Bring a 1-quart, paperboard milk/soymilk carton to use for a mold, and an old bath towel for wrapping the soap - to keep it warm as it solidifies.  Materials cost of about $10 included in fee.  Sign up for both soap making classes for only $65 (Save $10).

Intermediate Traditional Soap Making

This is a hands-on workshop that covers the next level skill and understanding for traditional soap-making techniques.  It includes "superfatting" with luxurious & emollient solid vegetable fats such as cocoa or shea butter.  We will use all-vegetarian ingredients, and scent our soap with delightful, pure essential plant oils. Supplies and handouts are included. Bring a 1-quart, paperboard milk/soymilk carton to use for a mold, and an old bath towel for wrapping the soap - to keep it warm as it solidifies. You will leave with a sample of the soap you helped to make, and instructions for curing and aging it on your own. The traditional soap-making process incorporates the use of lye, which is caustic. Appropriate for ages 15 - 115 years old.  Prior enrollment in Intro Soap Making class is very helpful, but not a prerequisite.  Sign up for both soap making classes for only $65 (Save $10).

Woodworking for Beginners-You Build It!! 
Tuesday      5:30-8:30 p.m.      9 weeks      Starts October 7
Students will learn the basics of woodworking through the construction of a small project. Brett, a certified design and technology educator, will lead participants through design, tool use and then the construction of  a small project such as an end table, shelf, or gun rack.  Over the 27 hours of shop time, everyone will utilize many of the hand and power tools in the CVU shop. This class is designed for total beginners as well as those that would like to learn how to do it right.  Shop for your materials after the first week.

Woodworking Workshop

Designed as an open lab, participants need to bring in a project they want to work on. Brett, a certified design and technology educator, will be your advisor as you work on starting or completing a project.  Students should have a basic familiarity with a table saw, planer and joiner and/or lathe. Review of specifics of CVU tools will be presented. Expert advice will be available in order for you to accomplish your goals. Take advantage of 27 hours of shop time with well oiled and sharp machines.  Designed for novice through advanced woodworkers.   Students are responsible for transporting their own materials over the duration of the course.

Designed for beginners, learn to decorate cakes using professional techniques.  This course is the first in a series of Wilton designed courses.  Fee covers Wilton decorating kit and book for beginners that are yours to keep.  People will even learn to make the rose.  Sally has vast experience teaching these courses, and many of her students have gone on to take all 3 courses.  Take Course II following this one; Course III will be offered in in the Winter or Spring session.

Cake Decorating II

Tomato Magic - Homemade Sauce and More

Have you always wanted to know how to make your own great sauce?    Adele's sauce comes from the old world family recipes and everyone will leave with new skills and some pasta topped with the Italian 'elixir of the gods'.  Besides sauce, people will prepare roasted tomatoes, an intense robust flavored delicacy that will last all winter in the freezer.  While the sauce simmers, all will dine on Adele's homemade sauce and pasta.  No one leaves hungry.  Participants are encouraged to save some of this summer's tomatoes to make more sauce at home.  All tomatoes and ingredients will be supplied for this class.  Bring enthusiasm and jars.

Putting Food By

Guitar for Beginners
This class is designed for those of all ages with little or no experience, 11 to 111 years old.  Join Sallie, an enthusiastic educator with years of teaching experience, to learn basic acoustic guitar skills and work on learning a few chords and songs.  Everyone will be playing music before long in this full 9-week class.  Bring your own guitar.  An electronic tuner is strongly recommended but not a pre-requisite.  Winter Access session will offer a continuation of this class.

Spanish for Beginners

French I  The Beginnings

Pennywhistle for Beginners

Learn the simple, yet expressive ancient musical instrument of Ireland, sometimes known as the tinwhistle. feadóg or Irish whistle. Dance Aerobics

Appalachian Style Clogging

West African Dance

Keep in shape this Fall with African dance done to live drumming!  Join Dayna Scott of Jeh Kulu Dance and Drum Theater, Ashley Bessette, and Hassimou Chimie Bangoura, a master drummer from Guinea, West Africa, for this fun and upbeat class.  New students and those with experience are encouraged to participate.   Classes include a warm up and progressive instruction to rhythms from Guinea, Senegal and Mali.  All instructor stipends will be donated to families in Guinea. West African Drum Class

Join Chimie Bangoura of Guinea, West Africa in this exciting Access offering.  Designed for beginners as well as those with some experience,  participants will learn the traditional rhythms and techniques of West African hand drumming (djembe).  Bring your own djembe or rent one of ours during class time for a modest fee of $30.  It won't be long before everyone will be able to set the rhythm to dance a lifetime.   All instructor stipends are being donated to families in Guinea Donations over and above fee will further support these families.

Dance Theater Improvisation

In a playful environment, participants will have an opportunity to enjoy creative exploration through movement, dance, sound and language. Structured exercises will be used, encouraging spontaneous expression to flow from presence and sensory awareness. Core Strength Training - Tuesdays

Work on your core strength to help sculpt your body over the year.  This course uses Pilates style mat exercises in combination with other exercises to develop core strength and control, particularly in the abdominals and back.  The workout helps everyone combine breath control with your activity to promote improved concentration, better posture, a flatter stomach and lean, sculpted muscles. Mindful Meditation For Beginners

Cooking Together: 3rd-5th Graders with Adult

Growing up, Adele's extended Italian family always cooked and ate together.  Last year's participants loved this class! Slow down with Adele and enjoy the pleasures of cooking and eating with a youngster.  Beginning with a vegetable base (soffritto), create a number of different dishes that are sure to be crowd pleasers at any meal.  Recipes and activities for this class will give everyone options to build a meal to satisfy one's own tastes.  Chicken, beef, beans, and rice will be used to prepare a delicious homemade meal.  For dessert, we will prepare a crispy, "better for you" Chocolate Chip Cookie--served hot out of the oven--a number one crowd pleaser. Join this fun-filled class for your preschooler to explore cooperative play with music, movement and pizza.  This class introduces motor skills, counting, rhythm and the many ways to move your body with the help of hula hoops, a parachute, balls and other fun props.   Parents may participate or watch as kids participate in cooperative groups and work on individual skills.  Bare-feet or soft shoes recommended.  Pizza will be provided for a quick pick me up before or after each class.

The Music Man:  Music games for Kids (ages 4-8) and Parents

Kids and parents will have a rocking blast while singing dozens of traditional songs and learning original songs and games that encourage participation and dancing.  Everyone gets to help create new original songs and new versions of familiar ones. Super Star Studio  DJing, Rapping and Slam Poetry (ages 10 and up open to parents)

Students will learn DJ turntable music mixing techniques, beat matching, and scratching on real vinyl and digital Serato Scratchlive. Sessions also include a lyric writing workshop and criticism as well as rap battling techniques and Stage presence. Beat Production and audio processing and mixing will be emphasized as well.  Each student will get a free studio recording of their DJing, production and/or lyrics at the end of the session and a video of a group performance will be filmed for You-tube. Parenting Tips for Success Seminar

CY-Connecting Youth will offer a one day seminar to help parents polish their parenting skills and give them tips on how to face some of the more challenging adolescent issues.  This seminar will be held on Saturday, October 11, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m at CVU High School.  Throughout the day, parents will learn how to: strengthen their family bonds; improve communication amongst all members of the family; set clear expectations and guidelines; express and control anger in healthy ways; increase children's participation in the family; and help their children make healthy choices.The day is open to all parents and guardians of children in grades 5-10, in the Chittenden South District and includes lunch and snacks. The cost is $30 per parent and some scholarships are available. If you want to learn how to touch type, this is the class for you. Requested by past participants to Access, here is your chance to finally start to learn with all ten fingers. Digital Camera Fundamentals

If you are a shopper or a still-in-the-boxer then this course will show you quick tricks for taking good digital pictures.  Learn how to use the dials, buttons, and menus of a basic Canon, Nikon, Olympus, or your own digital camera.  Receive individual instruction as you compose pictures of different qualities and download them using CVU's new computers.  This hands-on experience will make anyone a better photographer as Duncan has helped hundreds of users get the most of their equipment.  A great way to improve computer literacy or shop for your next purchase.  Class cameras and 10 free digital prints provided by PhotoGarden.

Enhance Digital Photographs

Adobe Photoshop Basics

New Household Eco-Team Initiative

Become part of the global warming solution by learning, and sharing how to move forward while partnering with like-minded neighbors.  This "30 Day Program to Lose 5000 Pounds" is a fun, accessible, course that will show you, step-by-step, how to dramatically reduce your CO2 output in just a month's time.  Calculate your current CO2 "footprint", create plans, track progress, and connect with neighbors using the materials supplied.  This new initiative is spreading across Vermont, and will make a noticeable dent as more people participate.  Simple actions will enable you to reduce your annual household CO2 output by at least 15%.  And, for the more ambitious, discover how you can bring positive change to your workplace, local schools, and community. Participants will be organized into 'neighborhood' eco-teams to support each other in the effort.

Tired of mowing a big lawn?  Join Charlotte to explore the many ways to enhance biodiversity and attract birds, butterflies and other wildlife to your garden.  Presentation and discussion focuses on incorporating birdhouses, backyard ponds, wildflowers and native plants into your home landscape.  Charlotte, a local garden designer, conservationist and environmental steward with the National Wildlife Federation, will even explain how you can certify your property as an NWF Wildlife Habitat by offering food, water, and places to raise young.

Backyard Astronomy

This is a two-week workshop designed for beginners. Participants will learn their way around the sky and be able to recognize constellations. Trees of Vermont - Identification and Bio-Ecology.

Intro to Shamanic Journeying

Bridge for Beginners

These lessons feature a 'hands on' teaching approach with students learning the game by doing exercises with actual cards at the table. No knowledge of bridge is required. If you always wanted to learn, this is a great opportunity in what has become an Access regular offering.  A lifetime of fun follows as people everywhere are playing bridge.  The 8 week course will give participants basic bidding system and card playing skills to build on with continued practice. The instructor, Phil Sharpsteen, is an accredited ACBL teacher and the current president of the Vermont bridge unit. Parenting Tips:  Staying Connected With Your Teen

Parenting the Joy of Reading

Parenting Tips for Success Seminar

CY-Connecting Youth will offer a one day seminar to help parents polish their parenting skills and give them tips on how to face some of the more challenging adolescent issues.  This seminar will be held on Saturday, October 11, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m at CVU High School.  Throughout the day, parents will learn how to: strengthen their family bonds; improve communication amongst all members of the family; set clear expectations and guidelines; express and control anger in healthy ways; increase children's participation in the family; and help their children make healthy choices.The day is open to all parents and guardians of children in grades 5-10, in the Chittenden South District and includes lunch and snacks. The cost is $30 per parent and some scholarships are available. Horsemanship for Adults

You will learn how a horse senses, moves, and feels; and how they interact with each other and other animals - including humans.  New riders, new horse owners, or experienced riders will gain a wealth of fascinating information that will promote a respectful relationship with a horse. Topics include prehistoric development, anatomy/physiology, herd behavior, training techniques, gaits/movements, and communication development. Experienced riders will enhance their in the saddle satisfaction.  If you've never ridden before then this is a great preparation for lessons.

Constitution 101 - One Night Adventure

Join a lively presentation of the essence of the US Constitution by our own very popular and animated CVU educator, Chris O'Donnell.  The United States Constitution, arguably the world's most influential and powerful political document, has never been perfect. The rights and liberties provided by the Constitution have routinely been imperiled. Historian Arthur Schlesinger observes that most Americans have a “hazy” understanding of our constitutional underpinnings and tend to take the Constitution for granted.  All participants will receive a free copy of this awesome document that has kept our democracy together and has been the model for democracies around the globe.  Guaranteed to stimulate, Chris will bring history to life for all those attending, as she illuminates one of our founding American documents.

Solar Energy 101

Is solar energy feasible in Vermont?  You bet it is!  Solar energy can give you power anywhere you need it - on a boat, recreational vehicle, summer cottage, on the farm, or even your home.  This class will focus on photovoltaics - the type of solar panels that make electricity when exposed to sunlight, and what they can do for you.  Learn about the potential of solar energy for our country, how solar panels and system components work, and how to design a system for your application.

The Myers Briggs Type Indicator  (MBTI) is the most widely used personality inventory in the world - learn how to tap into the insights MBTI  can provide you.   Info from this course can help participants improve work or family relationships, and/or help in life and career choices.  Through activities and discussion, Kristin will bring personality type into focus for all to better understand your preferences, behaviors, and choices.
